Marketing Case Study - Samsung vs. Apple

Over the years there has always been a rival between Samsung Galaxies and Apple iPhones yet they still seem to be equal in the end. They both are very popular and are the majority of sales in the market for mobile phones. Despite all of this Samsung still seems to fall short from Apple and come in as number two on the list. This only makes them work harder to keep pushing through and stay on Apple's tail. From various marketing tactics Samsung has created ways to show how they compare to iPhones. In 2017 Samsung had released a commercial the showed how they can give people a phone that consumers would prefer as well as getting their hands a little dirty. The commercial is about a man getting the latest iPhone and how he had to keep getting the newer model whenever it was released because of the amount of changes Apple was constantly making to the iPhone. In the end, the gentleman in the commercial saw the people waiting in line for the most recent iPhone and how he was satisfied switching over to the Samsung Galaxy.

I thought the commercial was very smart on their part and being an iPhone fanatic they weren't wrong about the amount of changes Apple makes. As I did further research I had also found that this commercial was a remake of a commercial they had released in 2011 when Samsung had just created the Galaxy S2 and how they were yet again aiming for Apple. Although the commercials are similar the one they made back in 2011 had more humor and realness. It showed people waiting in line for hours for the newest iPhone and how important it was to them to get it. As they have been standing in line they see someone off the street holding the Galaxy and are mesmerized by how different and bigger it was.

Samsung's value proposition can be viewed as new, clean, easy to get things done, reliable and reasonably priced. Aside from making mobile phones Samsung has also made other electronics such as computers and household items. They moved into the phones market in 1988 but before then they were established in 1969 making them a very successful company. For now they are behind Apple in the smartphone business but who knows in the next few years they might pass them and reach first.

Marketing in the News - Amazon

Nowadays the majority of people order what they need online especially places like Amazon. They have continued to ring in their success with being able to open a second headquarters and announced they how it's narrowed down to 20 different cities in the U.S. specifically looking for a metropolitan area and be able to appeal new talent to the areas. The article written for this subject talks about how Amazon will create more jobs when opening the second HQ as well as how the city will be "transformed" comparing it to the way Seattle is now. Along with the grand opening of their soon HQ2 they have also gained more attention from advertisement deals. We see that Google and Facebook continue their streak of advertisements but is it now Amazon to take a dive in to placing more ads on their website, an article goes into further details discussing this future turn for the company.

However, when they had first announced their billion dollar project there were over 200 cities willing to partake in being another home for Amazon. This created huge media frenzy and meetings of what top cities it was would come down to. I believe that choosing from 20 cities was a good response rather than to narrow it down to a smaller or higher number it was just the right amount of information the public needed.

Amazon is a big deal when it comes to online shopping and being able to provide a variety of products to their customers gives them that one-of-kind quality. When someone wants to get a gift but doesn't have time to head to the store they are able to find just about anything they need on Amazon. The brand has made a name for itself and continues to prove it as their revenue grows. Marketing in the smallest way for a company can create a wave of events that will in the long run benefit their growth and their publicity. A company showing how they are able to expand definitely creates a stage for themselves.

Social Listening - Nike

When someone needs a pair of athletic shoes whether it is for sport or style most people think about getting something from Nike especially coming from the younger generation. Nike has been a successful sport clothing line that keeps increasing it's demand. One could describe Nike to be comfortable and cool. Not only has the company had a very successful clothing line they are able to sponsor a variety of sports and athletes being the major seller for the individual or team.

Social media has become an important aspect for a company to branch out to their customers and find out a little more as to what is interesting to this group of people. As I had scrolled through twitter I was seeing when a new product is released people love what they have done. After viewing many tweets like these it had me thinking if the customers really have fallen in love or do they feel this way toward every product because of the amount of credibility and suave the company has gained.

There are also tweets about what popular celebrity is wearing what new Nike product. They are showing how "even the cool people wear Nike" façade which works out for them great when celebrities are getting their picture taken wherever they go. Lastly, there were a lot of tweets about what next athlete is going to collaborate with the company and how people were able to get new information. When a company is able to make society talk about what kind of design will the athlete bring is huge, this group of individuals will spread the talk like wildfire and eventually at the end of the day every one knows about it.

Despite the amount of success and glory Nike company has had over the last few years they will always be needing new ideas to keep demand high. If I were the brand manager I would go out and ask the younger athletic generation what they are looking for in their clothing. I would go out to a track, basketball or soccer game and truly ask what is and what isn't working for them as they are practicing to become better at what they love.

Marketing in The News

Topic 2:

In an article posted on AdAge the author was mentioning about the change in CEO for the Mexican grilled restaurant chipotle. They had talked about how after the many food-borne illnesses consumers had reported there has been a downfall into how the company is managing, from creating better food and essentially creating a better reputation. The current CEO decided to step down after two rough years there is an article that tells all about passing it over. The board of directors for the company is finding a better replacement for the company.

The company had always been well known to serve fresh Mexican food for consumers and was a leading food-chain in the U.S. until their recent outbreaks. Chipotle having a reputation of good food and having a modern setting in their sit-down restaurant was in danger after the illnesses. The main way it applies to marketing is how their creditability was in danger, people were more reluctant to go and get a meal there. After the company realized what was happening to their brand they are starting to move in a different direction and hiring a new CEO. The article explains how they have five potential CEO replacements that have worked in the food industry such as Panera, McDonald's, Taco Bell etc. all of these candidates have experience working in a successful food chain in the U.S. The potential and success these candidates have are hopefully going to bring more satisfied consumers and giving back Chipotle their creditability.

In the end, the article was able to show me how marketing can be different than just spreading an ad all over social media or television. There are other ways to show the consuming population something they most likely don't need but will want. Marketing is very powerful for companies to have and being good at it makes them even more successful.

About me

Topic 1:

Hello!

I had enrolled in this course to simply understand the ideas of marketing. I am not a business major but am a health management major although I feel that I have taken so many business like courses that I want to minor in business. I didn't know what to expect from a marketing course except that we study why companies do what they do with their products and how consumers respond to these changes.

Aside from going to school and working I do enjoy listening to music with my roommate who has an awesome record player. We love searching for new music outside our comfort zones and going through vinyls. I also enjoy sketching and drawing while listening to music. There is a lot more activites I like to do but these are the basics. I am really looking forward to what the course will teach me this term.
